Included in Secretary Vilsack's announcement of USDA closings was the closing of the
Coshocton research laboratory in Ohio. I suspect that the decision may have been based on the number of employees displaced instead of logical reasoning. The laboratory has been a leader in soil erosion research and education since the 1930's. Key information was gathered at Coshocton concerning No-till farming, and the effectiveness of contour strips, nutrient management and cover crops. I hope the functions of the laboratory have been assigned to other facilities. The Coshocton Laboratory's contribution to sustainability in agriculture cannot be overestimated.
