New Jersey recently enacted legislation to curb lawn fertilizer usage in the
state. The purpose of the legislation is to reduce nutrient levels in surface waters in order to restore ecology. The bill included a ban on phosphorous fertilizers in lawns. This law is much more specific than the TMDL law due to take effect in Florida. I am not sure how long the water will be monitored to determine if more measures are needed. I think this is another warning shot to agriculture to clean up their act. Right now the bill only affects development, but look out. If it has some measurable success I look for other states to follow suit, perhaps with EPA prodding.
